As a supplier with a rich understanding of the complexities of the orthopaedic industry, we have produced thousands of artificial hip joints.
These hip joints are produced as a series of bespoke sizes depending on the requirements of the client. Sizes vary from Ø 44 mm up to Ø 76 mm with a raw casting weight from 130 gr. to 760 gr.
The parts are produced in Germany and are from a Cobalt-Chrome alloy – one of the few materials which are approved for this application in a human body.
Optimised Production Line
An alternative to the pre-existing production method for this part was developed by Texmo Blank, which improved the quality and the process stability substantially. We also ran advanced simulations to accelerate development time and reduce costs.
We established special instructions for handling the wax parts which avoided damaging the very fragile wax geometry. The time saved by streamlining the production line for this series meant that the first prototypes were – start to finish – redesigned, produced and delivered within 8 weeks.
Prototyping
Prior to involvement from Texmo Blank the complex external ‘tripods’ were glued to the cup by hand to the wax part. Our printed wax prototypes, allowed us to position the tripods, faster than manually attaching them and also improve accuracy to a tenth of a millimetre.
The process of making wax prototypes, ensured flexibility and continuity across the entire series of parts, while being more efficient and reducing costs due to time saved.
Centrifugal Casting
Our German facility has the capability to cast under vacuum within a centrifuge. Centrifugal casting guarantees the inner quality of the parts, and that all tripods are fully cast to exceptionally high quality.
As well as this it was specifically chosen to meet the qualitative requirements of the part series.
Testing
We established rigorous production parameters and confirmed suitability during the sample process. These standards are thoroughly adhered to in all subsequent series productions, with strict visual inspections ensuring 100% compliance.
Each component is subjected to comprehensive x-ray analysis to identify any internal inconsistencies, and is also fully checked for any cracks to ensure its integrity and quality.
Delivery
Series deliveries are done with a Kanban-system within 4 - 8 weeks. We synchronise schedules between the customer and their subcontractor. Shorter lead times have enabled the customer to become more flexible.
