Is Investment Casting a Primary Manufacturing or Secondary Manufacturing?
On this page
What is Primary Manufacturing?
Primary manufacturing is the process of making a product from raw materials. It can be done through casting, machining and forging, and is typically used to create metal parts.
What is Secondary Manufacturing?
Secondary manufacturing includes any process that is done after the initial manufacturing process. These processes may alter the part or the assembly in terms of shape, size or finish.
Investment Casting – Which is it?
Due to the fact investment casting uses raw materials - wax, ceramics, various alloys - in its process to create component parts it is considered a primary manufacturing process. Any processes applied to the parts after the casting process would be considered secondary processes.
Processes that follow investment casting, including machining and finishing, are such secondary manufacturing processes.
